Project Overview

The Challenge

A Lahore food company was processing locally grown Punjab rapeseed — erucic acid-free, low-glucosinolate varieties grown in the Faisalabad district. The goal was halal-certified canola oil for the domestic Pakistani market. Key challenges: Punjab rapeseed varieties have higher glucosinolate content than Canadian canola, requiring careful steam conditioning to prevent bitter compound formation; and generating revenue from the press cake via animal feed pellets to improve plant economics.

Pakistan imports the majority of its edible oil despite growing significant domestic rapeseed and other oilseeds. This plant contributes to import substitution while creating a premium halal-certified local brand.

The Solution

SinoOil designed a double-pressing system optimised for high-oil Punjab rapeseed:

  • Steam conditioning at 105°C to deactivate myrosinase enzyme before pressing, preventing glucosinolate hydrolysis to bitter compounds
  • Pre-press 6YL-180 (×2) for first extraction pass, followed by second-pass press 6YL-160 (×2) recovering residual oil from press cake
  • Batch refinery with extended degumming stage to ensure complete phospholipid and glucosinolate removal
  • Meal pellet press (flat-die type) converting press cake to uniform 6mm pellets for sale to dairy farms at PKR 120/kg
  • Full PCSIR halal certification documentation and PSQCA compliance reporting

"Pakistan grows enough rapeseed to supply half our national cooking oil needs but we import most of our oil. My plant changes that equation for my region. The double-pressing design from SinoOil gets the maximum oil out, and the pellet press turns the meal into premium feed. My dairy farmer neighbours are my best customers."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between rapeseed oil and canola oil?
Rapeseed oil and canola oil come from the same plant species (Brassica napus or Brassica rapa) but differ in erucic acid and glucosinolate content. Traditional rapeseed oil contains 20–50% erucic acid (linked to cardiac concerns at high intake) and high glucosinolates that produce bitter, pungent taste compounds. Canola oil is produced from low-erucic-acid, low-glucosinolate varieties developed in Canada ("canola" = Canadian oil), with erucic acid below 2% and glucosinolates below 30 micromoles/gram. Punjab rapeseed varieties are erucic acid-free but may have moderately higher glucosinolates than Canadian canola, requiring steam conditioning before pressing to deactivate the myrosinase enzyme that converts glucosinolates to bitter compounds. Properly processed and refined, both produce a mild, golden cooking oil with an excellent fatty acid profile rich in oleic and linolenic acids.
Why is double-pressing used for rapeseed?
Double-pressing is used for high-oil-content seeds like rapeseed (38–45% oil) because a single press cannot efficiently remove all accessible oil without generating excessive friction heat that damages quality. The first press (pre-press) extracts approximately 20–25% oil, reducing cake oil content to 15–18%. The second press processes this partially extracted cake, recovering an additional 10–12% oil, reducing residual cake oil to 6–8%. The dual-pass system achieves better overall oil yield at controlled temperatures versus single high-pressure pressing, while producing a drier, higher-protein cake. For this 20 TPD Pakistan plant, double-pressing achieved a 36% total yield from rapeseed with 38–40% starting oil content — nearly 5 percentage points higher than achievable with a single-press approach.
How is glucosinolate managed in rapeseed oil processing?
Glucosinolates in rapeseed are managed through heat conditioning before pressing. The enzyme myrosinase catalyses glucosinolate hydrolysis into bitter, potentially harmful compounds (isothiocyanates, nitriles, oxazolidinethiones). Steam conditioning at 100–110°C for 15–20 minutes deactivates myrosinase before pressing, preventing this hydrolysis during processing. Intact glucosinolates are largely water-soluble and are removed during the refinery's degumming and water-washing stages. Refined oil from this Lahore plant tests below the detection limit for glucosinolates, confirming the combined conditioning and refinery approach is fully effective. Laboratory testing by GC-MS confirms compliance with PSQCA food standards before retail distribution.
How is halal certification obtained for edible oil in Pakistan?
Halal certification for edible oil in Pakistan is issued by PCSIR (Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) or accredited certification bodies recognised by the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA). The process requires: facility inspection confirming no haram inputs (no pork-derived processing aids, no alcohol-based solvents), production process review, product testing by PSQCA-accredited laboratory, and traceability documentation from raw material to finished product. For plant oils like rapeseed/canola oil, halal certification is straightforward as the raw material is inherently plant-based. The main concern is equipment cleaning chemicals — no alcohol-based sanitisers are used. SinoOil provides complete halal-compatible equipment design documentation to support the certification application process.
What is the protein content of rapeseed press cake and its animal feed value?
Rapeseed press cake (from mechanical pressing, not solvent extraction) typically contains 28–34% crude protein on a dry matter basis. It is a valuable protein supplement in ruminant (cattle, buffalo, goat) and poultry feeds. Pelletized rapeseed meal from this Lahore plant sells at PKR 120/kg to dairy farms as a protein supplement for buffaloes and dairy cattle. Ruminants tolerate the remaining glucosinolates and sinapine in rapeseed meal better than monogastric animals. Dairy cattle inclusion rates of 1–2 kg/day do not cause quality concerns and meaningfully supplement dietary protein. The meal pelletizing operation adds approximately 15–20% to the plant's total revenue, significantly improving overall economics and reducing the payback period to 22 months.
