Project Overview

Uruguay has the highest organic food consumption per capita in South America, with an educated consumer base that understands organic certification and is willing to pay 2–3× conventional price for genuine certified products. This Montevideo food company sources peanuts from certified organic farms in Rivera Department (north Uruguay) and processes them into cold-pressed certified organic peanut oil for premium Uruguayan retail and potential EU export.

MGAP Organic Certified EU 2018/848 Compatible SS316 Contact Surfaces N₂ Blanketed Storage

Challenge

Organic certification imposes design constraints that go beyond food-grade standards: no chemical processing aids (no hexane, no bleaching chemicals, no synthetic antioxidants), no physical contamination with non-organic product, and complete chain of custody traceability from farm to bottle. Every equipment choice must be defensible under MGAP audit: stainless steel grade (SS316 for organic, not SS304 which may have crevice corrosion harbouring non-organic residues), cleaning protocols documented, no shared lines with conventional processing.

The EU organic export pathway required additional documentation layer: EU Regulation 2018/848 chain of custody certificates, operator registration, and lot-level traceability compatible with European customs requirements. This was built into the plant design from day one.

Solution

SinoOil designed the plant with SS316 as standard for all oil contact surfaces (tanks, filters, pipework, fittings) — a specification upgrade over standard SS304, justified by the organic premium pricing. Cold-press configuration: two 6YL-130 presses at low RPM (40 RPM), 72-hour natural settling in SS316 tanks, SS316 plate filter. No heat above 50°C anywhere in the oil path.

Nitrogen blanketing on all four SS316 storage tanks maintains headspace oxygen below 0.1%, preserving peroxide value below 2 meq/kg throughout storage without any chemical antioxidant — a critical organic compliance point. The 500 ml dark glass bottling station fills and caps under an organic chain of custody record that connects each bottle to a specific farm lot, pressing date, and MGAP organic certificate number.

The documentation system produces MGAP organic certificates, EU 2018/848 compatible chain of custody records, and FFA/peroxide quality certificates — all in Spanish and English, enabling the client to respond to the Netherlands EU organic importer inquiry that arrived within 12 months of commissioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are MGAP organic certification requirements for edible oil producers in Uruguay?

MGAP organic certification requirements: (1) organic farm supplier certification — 3-year conversion period; (2) processor certification — no prohibited substances (synthetic pesticides, hexane, synthetic bleaching agents), organic-dedicated equipment; (3) chain of custody documentation from farm to bottle; (4) MGAP annual audit. MGAP certification is compatible with EU organic regulation 2018/848 under a bilateral recognition framework.

What is EU organic regulation 2018/848 and how does it apply to South American edible oil importers?

EU Regulation 2018/848 sets organic production and labelling standards. For South American importers: Uruguay has bilateral equivalence with the EU, meaning MGAP-certified oil can be imported with a Certificate of Inspection (COI). Chain of custody documentation, lot number traceability, and operator registration are required. The EU organic logo is permitted on imported products from equivalent countries. The Montevideo plant's bilingual documentation system was designed for EU export from day one.

What is the difference between cold-press and expeller-pressed oil for organic certification?

Both cold-press (<50°C) and expeller-pressed (higher temperature) are mechanically extracted methods acceptable under organic certification — organic certification prohibits hexane extraction only. Cold-press retains more tocopherols (500–600 mg/kg vs 400–500 mg/kg expeller) and natural flavour. The 'cold-pressed' claim commands a further 20–30% premium on top of 'organic' at retail. The Uruguay plant satisfies both organic and cold-press requirements through SS316 surfaces, temperature monitoring, and no-chemical-aids policy.

How is the premium organic peanut oil market positioned in Uruguay?

Uruguay has the highest organic food consumption per capita in South America — approximately 12% of urban consumers regularly purchase organic products. Certified organic cold-pressed peanut oil retails at UYU 480/500ml vs UYU 220/500ml conventional — a 2.2× premium. Distribution: El Trigal organic chain (40 stores, Uruguay's largest organic retailer), Tienda Inglesa premium section, Natural Almacén stores in Montevideo, and online via PedidosYa. Consumer profile: university-educated, environmentally conscious, health-focused.

Why is nitrogen blanketing important for organic peanut oil and how does it work?

Nitrogen blanketing prevents oxidation without synthetic chemical antioxidants — essential for organic compliance. Food-grade N₂ is injected into storage tank headspace, reducing oxygen to <0.1% (vs 21% in air). Benefits: maintains peroxide value <2 meq/kg throughout storage (vs 4–6 meq/kg for air-stored oil); preserves natural tocopherols and flavour; organic compliant (nitrogen is naturally occurring). The plant's on-site N₂ generator produces nitrogen from compressed air, eliminating cylinder supply dependency.
